What is Parent Involvement?

Tomorrow I will be working with Dr. Renner-Singer on our School-wide Title Plan. It’s a plan that is required by the State in order to receive additional funding for educational programs. One piece is titled: Parent Involvement. But what is that? Many of us picture the involved parent as being the one who volunteers at school, attends PTO meetings, and bakes stuff. Today, most parents are working and families are busier than ever. Maybe we need to better define “involved” so it fits with today’s world. Believe it or not, this subject has been researched! John Hattie, a professor of education in New Zealand, examined over 800 studies related to student achievement and put his conclusions in one book (He clearly had no life. He probably was not in the PTO.) He concluded that a parent’s high expectations and aspirations have a greater influence on student success than help with homework or even limiting TV time! So, if you feel too busy to “help,” tell your child that you expect him or her to do well and accomplish great things. Hold them accountable and encourage them. Your high expectations are the best form of parental involvement you can give. That, and baking. Have a great week.
